The timing of the North American premiere of “Victoria,” already a success across the Pond, feels notable. The same story told ten or twenty years ago may have a similar look and feel, but today’s audience is primed in a specifically 2017 way for this story. Arriving not just in the wake of “The Crown’s” Golden Globe successes, but also as the unsung women of color behind NASA’s “Hidden Figures” are dominating at the box office while and Natalie Portman’s take on Jacqueline Kennedy is poised to win her a second Oscar. All these and more speak to a sudden interest in, and need to reclaim and elevate, all the women’s history that has been erased — in government, the sciences, or elsewhere.
